The 2019 People’s Choice Awards now officially the E! People’s Choice Awards is here again! The event is scheduled to hold on the 10th of November to honor the best in pop culture for 2019.
For those of you who don’t know, the People’s Choice Awards has been going on for full forty-five years, started by CBS network in 1975 before popular American entertainment network, E! took over it in April, 2017. It is an American awards show that aims to recognize people in entertainment; movies, music, social media, reality series, etc.
Now unlike the Grammys and Oscars, the People’s Choice Awards (PCA) as the name connotes, uses votes by the general public to determine winners of each category.
I know most of you are already thinking, what is our business? It is an American award show, not my problem. Well, here’s the kicker, for this year’s awards, they added a new category that should concern us! Yes. The category is for ‘African Influencer of the Year’.
The award for the ‘African Influencer of the Year’ according to E! aims to recognize “some of the most iconic and influential people on the African continent.
In case you’re wondering, I do follow the network (E!) from time to time and unlike some entertainment news outlets, their news stories are for the most part, reliable. So imagine my surprise and joy when I saw the new category added. E! also just last year completed a reality series in the search for a red carpet host from South Africa and it would also seem that our very own D’banj is one way or the other a part of the E! family as I have often spotted him in a number of their adverts alongside some of their own hosts.
E! is a wide network that slowly and recently seems to be stretching further, wanting to expand deeper in to Africa.
Also most recently they launched and began airing a game show tagged, ‘Celebrity Game Night’ hosted by South Africa’s Anele Mdoda alongside Jason Goliath and Ayanda Thabethe. The game show feature African celebrities on a night of fun and ‘sweet recklessness’, playing ridiculous games, competition, etc. I also heard Nigeria’s Ice Prince is one of the celebrities to be featured on the show.
Anyway back to the PCA’s and the new category. I found out that amongst the nominees for the category of ‘African Influencer of the Year are our very own Davido, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade. Others include Tanzanian Artist, Diamond Platnumz, South Africa’s Tv and Radio personality (their own Toke Makinwa if I dare say), Bonang Matheba, South African rapper, Cassper Nyovest and Minnie Dlamini-Jones, a South African actress and OAP.
My major surprise here is the fact that I’ve barely heard a beep about this! I mean, seriously nobody is talking about this. It is a real wonder that all the ‘stans’ who love to pit Wizkid and Davido against each other have not taken advantage of it already to cause an online stir.
Then again, even the artistes have barely said anything about it and I am wondering why. Does it mean that little to them? I mean it’s not possible that they don’t know about it, is it? Or maybe I’m just overreacting. Anyway, voting has ended so there isn’t much anybody can do about it now. The show would be aired on the 10thof November so the least we can probably do is to keep fingers crossed and see who would win.
PS. This has nothing to do with seeking white validation; so if that is what was on your mind while reading this article, you can rest now.
