
A powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit Turkey and Syria early on Monday, resulting in the death of 1,800 people and leaving thousands more injured. The quake, one of the strongest in the region in over 100 years, was recorded 23 kilometers (14.2 miles) east of Nurdagi, in Turkey’s Gaziantep province, at a depth of 24.1 kilometers. Aftershocks of magnitude 7.5 have been felt across the region for hours. Turkey’s disaster agency is currently running search and rescue operations and has appealed for help from the international community.
